What is a handwriting font template?

A handwriting font template is a printable sheet with one box for every character a font needs: A–Z, a–z, numbers, punctuation and accent marks. Because each character has its own box, the font is built from exactly what you wrote instead of being guessed from a sample.

Template or photo: which gives a closer match?

The template gives an exact copy: every letter in the font is the one you drew. A photo of a few lines is faster and needs no printer, but FontQuill draws the letters it does not see, so it looks like your writing rather than matching it stroke for stroke.

What is on the template

English fits 94 boxes on one page. Accented letters are built from the marks you write (´ ` ˆ ¨ ˜ and more), so Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese add only a few boxes and still fit on one page. Cyrillic and Greek add their own alphabets. 27 languages are available.

Tips for clean, even letters

Write at your normal size and speed with a pen that leaves an even line. Keep each character inside its box. Photograph in daylight from straight above, without shadows across the page. Dark ink on plain white paper gives the cleanest outlines.

Print settings for the handwriting font template

Print the handwriting font template at 100% or "Actual size", not "Fit to page", on plain A4 or US Letter paper. Both sizes work because the four black corner squares tell the scanner where every box is. Black-and-white printing is fine. Do not print double-sided: the ink shows through and adds marks. If your printer adds a margin, that is fine as long as all four squares are on the page.

Why a template scan fails, and how to fix it

Most failed scans come from three things: a corner square cut off in the photo, strong shadows across the page, or very light pen strokes. Photograph from straight above with the whole page in view, in daylight or under an even ceiling light, and use a dark felt-tip. If you printed the template for other languages, print it again for the languages you picked, because each layout carries a check code.

A handwriting font template for your language

The handwriting font template changes with the languages you tick. Spanish adds the tilde for ñ and the inverted ¿ ¡, French adds œ and the cedilla, German adds ß and the umlaut dots, Polish adds its tails and strokes. Cyrillic and Greek add their own alphabets on extra pages. You only write each accent mark once: the font builds every accented letter from it.

Handwriting template questions

Is the handwriting font template free?

Yes. Printing the template is free, and a free account includes 150 credits, enough to turn one filled-in English template (100 credits) into a font and preview it. Downloading needs a plan or a credit pack, from $9.99.

Can I print it on Letter paper?

Yes. Print at 100% on A4 or US Letter. The four black corner squares let us find every box, so do not crop or scale them away.

What if I do not have a printer?

Use the photo option instead: write two or three sentences on plain paper and upload a photo. It is close to your writing, though not an exact copy.

Can I take the photo with my phone?

Yes. Start on your computer, scan the QR code with your phone camera and photograph each page. The photos appear on your computer.

What files do I get?

TTF, OTF and WOFF2. They work in Word, Google Docs, Canva, Cricut Design Space, Goodnotes and on websites. See how to install a font.

Can I fix one letter later?

Write that letter again on a fresh template and make the font again. For the full walkthrough, read how to make a font of your handwriting, exactly.

How long does it take to fill in the template?

About 15 minutes for the English page at a relaxed pace. Each extra language adds a minute or two.

Can I fill in the template on an iPad?

Not yet as a file: the template is read from a photo of a printed page. Print it, write on paper and photograph it.
